History
The small island of Nouvelle Monde in Meridona's eastern islands is home to the oldest known settlement in Meridona. Enigmatic pirate, Apollinaire Vaillant chose the small island to build a utopian home for himself and his loyal followers known as the Nocte Nautas. With a plethora of wealth, supplies, and weapons, the pirates constructed extravagant palaces, statues, and park along Meridona's eastern coast, naming the region Portobonilla.

In 1712, the Royal Navy launched a raid on the pirates' homes. Vaillant and his followers were no match for the soldiers, the Royal Navy assumed control of the island. The few structures that were not destroyed in the raid, were used by the Royal Navy as a strategic outpost until 1736, when they abandoned the island.

In 1800, Portuguese industrialist Caesar de Souza, a relative of an original settler of Portobonilla, established a fishing village on the old town site, and later, Meridona's first newspaper. Portobonilla has grown to become one of Meridona's most important cities, despite it's smaller size than the larger metropolitan regions. It's population is limited by the Ile Nouvelle Monde's small size, and a ban on any structures over 7 stories tall. The town's historic past, beauty, and lively culture make it one of the most beloved cities in Meridona.

FĂștbol
Former International Footballer of the Year Anton Nasau was born and raised in Portobonilla. His international success for global power Bayern Munich was responsible for the rising popularity of the sport in Meridona throughout the 1970's and 80's.

Despite it's small size and location outside a metropolitan region, Portobonilla is home to one of MIFA's most successful franchises. Sporting Portobonilla has won 5 MIFA championships, the 3rd most of any franchise. The play in the unique Nasau Stadium, which is cut into the face of a cliff.
