The Meridona Island Fútbol Association was founded in 1948 by Augustin Diaz, Meridonan who played professionally for several European teams. The league started with just two teams, Alasdairo Olympique and Cavalry FC, who traveled the island and played on makeshift pitches. By 1956, the league had grown to 4 teams, adding franchises in Marshdale and Portobonilla. The MIFA also constructed a stadium in Alasdairo for teams to play their games.
In 1975, MIFA's popularity on the island skyrocketed, thanks to a young superstar named Anton Nasau. Nasau was born and raised on Meridona in Portobonilla, before signing a large contract with German superpower Bayern Munich. Nasau would go on to dominate the Bundesliga competition and win Footballer of the Year at the tender age of 20, developing a loyal following in his homeland and inspiring an entire generation of future Meridonan footballers.
By 2000, the league had expanded to it's current total of 8 teams and became a member of FIFA. The top four teams each season advance to a group playoff, with the top 2 teams then competing for the Island Cup. Alasdairo Olympique currently has the most cup titles with 16, while Cavalry FC is close behind with 11.
