Thelonius Alasdair recognized the importance of the sciences in Meridona, establishing the town of Hipparcho and recruiting some of the finest scientists from throughout the world to live and work there. In 1797, the Hipparcho Observatory was built and continues to serve as the island's scientific center. Despite occupying a building over 200 years old, the observatory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.
In 2009, construction commenced on the Hipparcho Subterranean Labs. At 8,500 feet, it is the deepest underground science facility in the world. Each level of the lab is committed to different fields, incluing geoscience, engineering, physics, biology, and astrophysics. The lab has made groundbreaking discoveries in the studies of dark matter and neutrinos.
