While Meridona's farmers struggled to get the agricultural industry off the ground during the first years of the island's settlement, ranching became a vital food producer for it's people. In addition to the native meriboar, cattle, pigs, sheep, various fowl, and even bison were brought to Meridona, establishing the long history of ranching on the island. The open grassland surrounding the villages of Pikalo and Mitalia serves as the island's primary ranching region and often referred to as the Carné Valley.
